Charles J. Minard: Russian Campaign (1869)

1869 Minard, Russian Campaign

This map (click to enlage) by Charles Joseph Minard (27 March 1781 – 24 October 1870 in Bordeaux) has become a classic and is available on Wikimedia Commons.

It is partly a piece of infografics, partly a map, partly a statistical analysis. Russia’s army marches through Europe, reaches Moscow and returns. It begins with massive manpower and returns not only defeated but thinned. The visualisation shows the losses. Information on the the temperatures the army had to endure on its return are added and correlated.
