Walter R. Houghton, Conspectus of the History of Political Parties (1880)

Susan Schulten presented this visualisation in her book Mapping the Nation and gives the file on her website http://www.mappingthenation.com/blog/?p=96 The author is Walter R. Houghton, Conspectus of the History of Political Parties (Granger, Davis & Co., 1880). It was lithographed by William B. Burford in Indiana.

From a standpoint of approach this is a timelie of movements struggeling for power, diverging and undergoing different phases. There has been a rivival of these in recent years. An 1894 version of this visulaisation is thus sold at HistoryShots, where one can also buy a second part extending into the 20th century.
